“Opportunities for Service Providers in the Global Marketplace”
Speaker: Gerald R. Shaye, Shaye Global LLC
When hearing the term “exporting,” people generally think of manufactured or agricultural products leaving the shores of the US for foreign countries. Surprisingly, the United States exports many services. In fact, the US has a positive balance of trade in services (exports less imports) consistently. Gerald R. Shaye of Shaye Global LLC will explore the concept of service exports, including consulting services, discuss strategies for finding opportunities in foreign markets and for identifying and qualifying foreign partners and explain the differences that must be understood when working in foreign markets.
A native of Albany, NY, Gerald “Jerry” Shaye was educated at Dartmouth College and the Columbia University Graduate School of Business. Upon completing his education, Jerry entered the Peace Corps, serving as a volunteer in Venezuela for two years. He continued working in Venezuela for 21 additional years, as an entrepreneur, an executive of a trading company and general manager for the country’s largest farmers’ cooperative.
From early 1990 until late 2012, Jerry worked as Director of International Trade Development for the New York State Department of Economic Development. His responsibilities included the promotion of exports from New York State as well as the attraction of foreign direct investment. He consulted with more than one thousand businesses in New York State.
During his career with NYSDED, Jerry led trade missions to China, Japan, Russia, Chile, Brazil, Argentina, Mexico, Venezuela, Peru and many European countries. He was invited by the Japanese government to participate in the Export Japan Study Program and was a delegate to an international conference of Trade Directors in Santiago, Chile. Jerry managed a creative program designed to promote the export of consulting engineering services to six Latin American countries.
Jerry has participated in more than 350 seminars, export promotion workshops and foreign investment projects in areas related to his responsibilities and attended more than 50 trade shows and conferences.
In October 2012, Jerry founded Shaye Global, LLC, a consulting firm dedicated to international trade development and accepted a position as Executive in Residence at The Sage Colleges. He serves as a coach with the U.S. government-sponsored Exportech program and works actively to provide global opportunities for businesses and educational institutions.
Jerry teaches International Business and International Marketing in the MBA programs at Union Graduate College, The Sage Colleges and The University at Albany as well as in Argentina, Russia, China, Venezuela and Mexico.
