Membership is open to any individual professional who consults to business, government or not-for-profits in any discipline, as well as aspiring consultants who have developed significant credentials and expertise in their field. We define consulting as offering advice or instruction based on a specialized competence and/or insight to a client for a fee or salary. The definition excludes the offering of advice or instruction that is primarily in support of the sale of products including, but not limited to, insurance and financial instruments or real estate.
A member is expected to qualify as a sole practitioner, a partner in a jointly administered partnership or as management-level staff in a business or organization with financial and administrative decision-making authority for his/her consulting activities.
A minimum of 51% of the Member’s earned income must be derived from consulting.
The Consulting Alliance carefully checks references before accepting new members to ensure that all members have the highest professional standards, have demonstrated quality work, and maintain impeccable ethics.
Consultants who meet the basic requirements above and demonstrate skills in the consulting profession may be invited to join as ‘Professional Members’. Applicants for this level must demonstrate several years of successful experience as a full time consultant, or have extensive consulting responsibilities in previous jobs. They must have three or more positive recommendations from consulting clients listed on their application forms.
Professional Members receive all benefits provided for Consulting Alliance members, including business development activities and full member voting rights.
Professional Members are expected to be active in the organization including serving on committees and/or participating in Consulting Alliance projects.
Consultants who meet the basic requirements above and who can validate skills in their consulting areas, but do not meet the income requirements and/or have not demonstrated expertise in the consulting profession by having a sufficient number of consulting clients or other consulting experience, may be invited to join as Associate Members. Associate Members must receive positive recommendations from at least two professional references who can attest to their skill in the subject area in which they propose to provide consulting services.
Associate Members will co-develop with a Consulting Alliance Professional mentor a customized self-navigated development program to help them meet requirements for Professional Membership within 2 years. Associate members may be granted annual extensions beyond their initial plan if they are proceeding diligently.
Associate Members will not be included in Consulting Alliance business development activities until sufficiently skilled to qualify as a Professional Member. They will not be listed on the “Consultant Directory” section of the Consulting Alliance web site, will not have access to the Business Development Forum, cannot vote on new members, officers or other binding issues, will not serve as voting members of the Board of Directors, hold office or serve as standing committee chairs.
Associate Members are expected to be active in the organization including serving on committees and/or participating in Consulting Alliance projects.
Dues for Associate and Professional Members are $60 per quarter.
