Steve Appel Consults with Census Bureau
Steve Appel, representing the Consulting Alliance in Washington, DC (Hey, I’m on K Street now, and you know what that means!) recently worked with the Census Bureau as a usability tester for a redesign of their American Community Survey (ACS) web site.

The Census Bureau no longer does a long-form questionnaire to every fourth household, in case you were wondering why you didn’t see one in April.  Instead, they conduct an annual large-sample telephone survey, filled with questions on national origin, income, health, housing conditions, and other demographic data.  They combine with the data from surveys of the previous two years, to provide a three year really large-sample “rolling” survey, large enough to provide extensive information down to the small town level.  For example, there are 99 people in the City of Albany whose first language is Yiddish.  If you can figure that out, imagine the useful data that might be available.

Alan Krieger and I used this tool for a workforce development report last year, and through the coming improvements, the ACS will be even easier to use.

COMMITTEE NEWS

Breakfast Program Committee
We had a great "working session" in July as a way to help the Alliance move forward and get a sense of each other's styles and approach to consulting. We came up with some great ideas and a lot of laughs and new insights about each other.

Input wanted!! We have the same 15-20 people come to most breakfasts. I know some of you have scheduling conflicts or just don't like getting up that early.  For the rest of you - any suggestions on how to make breakfast programs of more interest? Please contact Alan Krieger at alan@krsol.com.

The Newsletter
We continue to seek input about the newsletter content - What do you want to see? Do you want us to expand the content to include tips, guidelines, or other information helpful to our membership? Would you like member profiles? Please send your ideas to Kimberley Debus at kdebus@melangepress.com.
